Our Trip to Nara National Museum

Our 190th entry in this blog is our trip to Nara National Museum. Well, this might be quite misleading as we did not really go inside the museum, but we just explored the outside area of it. Sorry for that. We were just enjoying the surrounding park with all the deer and ice cream stands that we ran out of time and decided not to go in. Hopefully next time we will 🙂 Anyway, here are our photos for the surrounding area of Nara National Museum.

The Nara National Museum (Nara Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan), located in Nara Park, is an art museum which primarily displays Japanese Buddhist art. Established in 1889, the museum retains its original building and is joined by a new wing that is connected to the original building by an underground passage. Here is our little Sai making friends with some of the deer.

Both wings display the museum’s permanent collection, which includes Buddhist statues, paintings, scrolls and ceremonial objects mainly from Japan. Actually, we were confused as to where the entrance is, hehe. Maybe that is why we ran out of time in this huge area 🙂

The new wing also houses temporary exhibitions, including an annual exhibition every autumn of treasures from Todaiji Temple, this is where we are heading to next 🙂 A ticket to the museum gives access to both wings, and English explanations are available throughout the museum.

Everyone is busy with their ice creams. 🙂 And that is our quick visit to the surrounding area of Nara National Museum. Hopefully we can go inside the museum itself next time. 🙂
