Our 312th entry in our digital diary is our first time visit to Plaza Cuartel in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. This place is part of our City Tour package but unfortunately, the area is closed for the day. Or maybe until further notice. Plaza Cuartel functions as a public park and an open-air war museum with information panels detailing its history as a site of the Japanese garrison during World War II. While it’s a historical site with memorial elements, it is an outdoor space rather than a traditional museum building.

Plaza Cuartel is one of the most poignant and historically significant landmarks in the Philippines. Originally constructed as a Spanish army barracks, this serene square was later used as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, where many tragically lost their lives. -guidetothephilippines.ph

Today, Plaza Cuartel serves as a solemn memorial with a peaceful garden, reflecting pools, and monuments that honor those who suffered here.

As one of the top attractions in Puerto Princesa, Plaza Cuartel offers visitors a poignant glimpse into the cityβs rich history and resilience. It stands as a powerful reminder of the past, surrounded by trees and shaded walkways that encourage reflection and reverence.

We were told about the horror stories from our tour guide. hehe. We’re not sure if we want to go inside anyway so we are fine here outside. haha! Until next time Plaza Cuartel. We still hope to be back despite the ghost stories you have. π
